Now known as Almaty, the main city of Kazakhstan is still commonly called Al Mata, and was the capital until 1997. Al Mata is probably the original home of the apple, and the humble fruit grows wild outside the city.
The Green Bazaar is one of the region’s great markets, and can’t be missed.
With big boulevards, mountain views and parks, Al Mata has cafes, bars, restaurants, De Beers, designer goods, horse meat pizza- basically everything you could want in a city.
