GATEWAY TO THE deep south and the colurfully named Cox’s Bazaar, Chittagong is Bangladesh’s second city. I didn’t go for the southern beaches or hills on the Burmese border, but to see imposing ships, tankers, freighters pulled apart and skeletoned at the shipbreaking yards nearby.
The shipbreaking yards. Piece by piece, these mighty ships are broken down by hand. No OHS in sight.
Anything from the ships that can be sold, will be recovered. Life rafts, bells, sextants, chairs, cutlery, all for sale in nearby shops.
Downtown Chittagong, Bangladesh's second city.
A workman is dwarfed by the hulking carcass of of tanker.
Another meal of rice and curry.
No hard hats, shoes or machinery. Visitors are not permitted onsite, without bribing the gatekeeper.
