“ISAAN” REFERS TO the whole north-east area of Thailand between Laos and Cambodia. This page covers just the parts near Cambodia, which shares an 817km border with Thailand, and has left its mark culturally, historically and ethnically over the area.
Parts of the area are truly Cambodia- parched, red dirt, pancake flat. The towns and cities are generally pretty small and pretty low-key. The people are also pretty laid-back- friendly, farmer folk, even if they have moved to town.
I have made several forays down the dirt roads and by-ways of Isaan, in search of the lefacy of the Khmer empire which stretched across this way, deep into Thailand.
